Internet on a home visit after all: how to make a hotspot

These days you can hardly do without internet… Maybe your exercises are on an online exercise program? Or your patient record is on Halingo and you want a quick look on your laptop while you are out rather than on your smartphone. Well, all of that is possible. Internet on the move.

The answer is to make a hotspot with your smartphone. What you need for that:

1. a smartphone
2. mobile internet

1. Go to the settings of your smartphone and then go to ‘Network and internet’. Then click on ‘Hotspot and tethering’. Watch out, because the device you use may have given these options a different name.

2. Press ‘Set up Wi-Fi hotspot’ or ‘Mobile hotspot’ to set it up.

3. Some smartphones generate a password for the network themselves. If not, you set a password yourself. Do choose a good password that is secure, because you do not want other people surfing along on your mobile data.

4. After you activate your hotspot an icon appears in the notification screen. There you can see at a glance how many devices are connected to your device.

5. Now go to your laptop and connect to the network of your smartphone. As the password you enter the password from step 3.

Watch out: the steps can sometimes work slightly differently depending on which smartphone you use. If you want to make a hotspot on a Samsung phone, for example the Samsung S10, you will find the option under ‘Connections’. You then only have to search for ‘mobile hotspot’ to enter the right settings.

Also bear in mind that the hotspot uses your mobile data. A tablet or laptop can easily use up hundreds of MB, because processes in the background of your laptop use the internet.
